Results Round up 04/01/2017

December brought a mixed month of results for Mapperley Park (probably down to the high number of Christmas parties….)

1st ladies just keep on winning, their latest success a 7-2 victory over Bingham. Jackie Thompson and Lisa Straw taking all 3 in a good all round team performance. It’s been a tough season so far for the 3rd ladies team, a third defeat on the bounce, this time going down 6-3 away at a strong Chilwell side. The three rubbers equally shared. It’s been equally as tough for the 4th ladies, as they suffered a 9-0 whitewash against Crusader.

The 1st mixed finally got their season underway against Byron at Ravenshead, with a hard fought 5-4 victory. In the local derby, an under strength 2nd mixed team got the better of Carlton 6-3, Nat Wright and Matt Haigh taking three rubbers.
Unfortunately the 5th mixed encounter against Beeston Fields had to be conceded due to high unavailability.

And finally in the men’s section the 3rd team made it three from three with another tight victory. This time 5-4, away at Boots. Harry and Brownlee and Fred Thuaud taking three rubbers. The match also saw an encouraging debut in the men’s section for junior Sahrin Ahluwalia.

Results Round Up 19/12/2016

After a stellar October, repeating the winning streak of November was always going to be difficult for Mapperley Park badminton club.

And that was the way it started…

2nd mixed, buoyed by their opening victories in division 2, came back down to earth with a bump as they lost 8-1 away to a very strong Bingham 4th team. Despite this they bounced back, twice… defeating Crusader 7-2 and Boots 9-0. The 5th mixed suffered their second loss as they went down 6-3 at St Giles despite Rob Richards and Julie Whitby taking two rubbers. The 6th mixed made it two from two as they won a tight match away at Arboretum 5-4, Mother and son combination Karen and Callum taking all three rubbers.
The 4th mixed team suffered their first defeat of the season at home to a strong and experienced Southwell team 7-2.

In the ladies section, the 1st team backed up their opening success against Chilwell with a convincing 8-1 victory over the University of Nottingham. Both pairs of Jodie Smee and Nat Wright, and Louisa Truong and Charlotte Close taking all three rubbers.
The 2nd ladies had mixed fortunes in November. They made it three from three with a solid 7-2 victory over Beeston Fields, but then suffered a disappointing 5-4 defeat at home to Carlton. The 4th ladies, in their first season, have found it tough going. They suffered their second loss, 7-2 away at The University of Nottingham.

After their impressive victory in the season opener vs Forest in the Premier Division, the 1st men’s travelled to Bingham in what was always going to be a tough encounter. They suffered a 7-2 defeat, with 6 of the 9 rubbers going to a Final set. The 3rdmen’s finally started their season at home to Beeston Valley. A tight 5-4 victory, with Andy Waplington and Gurj Singh taking three rubbers.
There were two walkovers in the men’s section for November. The 1st men’s Vs University and the 3rd men’s Vs Rushcliffe Arena. Both resulting in 9-0 victories for Mapperley Park

Match Fees

It was agreed that match fees would be amended to £4 for both home and away. The junior match fee has been abolished. Meaning all match fees are now £4

Mapperley park BC 2015/2016 Season Round up

Another season has come and gone in the blink of an eye. It has been mainly a season focused on maintaining what the club achieved last season. This has been achieved, with a few ups and downs along the way. So here is a season summary, team by team:

1st Men’s

A tough season back in the top flight for the Men’s 1st. With West Bridgford dropping out, it was vital that one victory was obtained. They got this, 5-4 away at Beeston Fields giving them a chance of maintaining their Premier division status.

2nd Men’s

A return to division 1 was the main target for captain Con Truong this season. However a bad start left the team having to win 2 of the last 3 matches to stay in the division. Injuries and unavailability didn’t help; one positive was Harry Brownlee becoming a permanent fixture in the 2nd team

3rd Men’s

After an unexpected promotion to division 2 the previous season, the 3rd men’s team was always going to find it tough going. The season ended in relegation back to division 3, but new players to the team like Callum Magee will benefit for the coming season

1st Ladies

The goal for 1st Ladies was to survive in Division 1, after flirting with danger for the past two seasons. They managed that comfortable this time round, winning 3 of 5 matches. One more victory would have seen them in the mix up for promotion

2nd Ladies

A good solid season for Julie Whitby’s team, winning 4 of their 7 matches in a very competitive division 2, with a couple of additions they could challenge for promotion back to division 1 next season.

3rd Ladies

Sarah Thomas took over the captaincy of the team from Maxine Day this year and continued the excellent progress. A second place finish in the 3rd tier might well guarantee them promotion to Division 2. A great mix of youth and experience which is pleasing to see

1st Mixed

The 1st Mixed team had a solid season on their return to Division 1, winning 4 of 7. They even had a chance of promotion up until the last 2 matches. Where unavailability and a nasty injury to Ruth Wear proving costly.

2nd Mixed

Probably the unluckiest team this season, finishing tied 1st in Division 2 along with Forest and Crusader. Promotion looked on the cards, however Nottingham Universities concession of their last 2 matches, giving 9-0 victories to both Forest and Crusader, condemned the 2nd team to another season in Division 2

3rd Mixed

The 3rd Mixed had a rotten season, losing all 5 matches and only scoring 9 rubbers. A season of stability is needed in 2016/2017

4th Mixed

Kara Gokova’s reliable troops once again secured a mid-table finish in division 3, again, a really competitive league, where another win would have seen them take second place

5th Mixed

After a couple of years without progress, the 5th mixed was freshened up. Sam Straw tried his hand at captaincy (despite injury) and nearly achieved promotion at the first attempt. Only a concession to Redhill on Mothering Sunday denied them.

Results round up 17/03/2016

It has been a successful month and a half for Mapperley Park Badminton club.

1st Ladies ended their season with a 5-4 victory over Beeston Fields. Meaning they finish the season with a 3-3 record and maintain their division 1 status for another year. The 2nd ladies have completely turned their season around with four straight victories over Byron (7-2) Crusader (8-1) Rushcliffe Arena (Walkover) Chilwell (5-4) Captain Julie Whitby has done a great job in getting the right results after a difficult start.
The 3rd Ladies are in with a chance of promotion after winning their final two games of the season again Beeston Fields (5-4) and Southwell (6-3) ending the season with a 5-2 record. Captain Sarah Thomas has carried on the great work by previous captain Maxine Day in bringing the youngsters through, with Rhia Simmonds, Laura Jones and Aylish Magee all excelling.

The 1st mixed ended their up and down season with two defeats. A 9-0 away loss at Roll Royce was not helped by serious injury to Ruth Wear in the first rubber. We wish her well in her strive to be fit for the new season. An understrength side missing Captain Steve Smith and Andy Shaw then lost 8-2 at home to Forest. The 3rd mixed ended a pretty disastrous season with an 8-1 loss at home to St Giles.
After starting the season with three straight losses, the 4th Mixed recorded 3 straight victories, ending their season with a 6-3 win at home to Unity. Andy Waplington and Captain Kara Gokova continuing their good form, taking a maximum.
5th mixed have a had a very good season, looking odds on for promotion, until an unavoidable forfeit away against Redhill. Dave Hall and Lisa Crouch have come in from Kimberley and showed their experience in what is a relatively inexperienced mixed team. Their latest result was a hard fought 5-4 win over Carlton. With Dave and Lisa taking a maximum. A win in their rearranged fixture against St Giles could see them enter the promotion mix.

After securing their first win of the season in men’s Premier, the 1st men’s (missing Steve Smith) suffered a tight 5-4 loss away at Byron, which would have guaranteed their status in the top division. James Watkins and Andy Shaw taking two. They ended the season with a tough 9-0 loss at home to Bingham. Their fate is now in the hands of the league as to whether they relegate one or two teams.
The 2nd men’s recorded a vital victory at home to Carlton, which should preserve their division 2 status, Harry Brownlee and Con Truong scoring a maximum. Four straight losses for the 3rd men’s looked like resigning them back to division 3, but victory over Unity (6-3) with Gurj Singh and Andy Waplington taking a maximum gives them hope with one match remaining away at East Leake.

Results Round Up 12/02/16

Mapperley park BC results round up 10/02/2016

With the Christmas break well and truly behind us, the back end of the badminton season is well underway.

The New Year started with a disappointing 5-4 defeat away at Southwell for the promotion hunting 2nd men’s, and on the same night, an 8-1 loss at Bingham for the 2nd ladies. Things didn’t improve for the 2nd ladies into February as they lost two close encounters against Phoenixwood and St Giles. 6-3 and 5-4 respectively.

The 2nd mixed kept their promotion hopes alive with a hard fought win in their final fixture away at East Leake, Sunny and Sam the stars of the show taking a maximum. Unfortunately the team need to rely on Nottingham University doing them a favour if they are to be promoted.
The 3rd mixed team suffered back to back defeats in February. 5-4 away to Phoenixwood and a 9-0 loss away to Beeston Fields, meaning relegation is looking likely. The 4th Mixed team picked up a vital victory away at Rushcliffe Arena. The pairs of Andy Waplington and Kara Gokova, Harry Brownlee and Julie Whitby both scoring important maximums, securing their division 3 status.
After a tough 9-0 loss away at Beeston Valley, the 3rd ladies bounced back to win 5-4 at home to Boots. Aylish Magee and Tessa Key winning the ninth and deciding rubber.

The 1st mixed picked up a good 5-4 victory at home to a strong Beeston Fields side, Craig and Louisa and Andy and Ruth (stepping in for the absent Jackie Thompson) taking two apiece. The result puts them right in the promotion shake up with two matches remaining. The 1st ladies lost a tight match at Chilwell, 5-4. They will be disappointed with this as they look for a top half finish.
On the same night, at the same venue, the 1st men’s took on Beeston Fields in the Premier Division. James Watkins and Andy Shaw taking a maximum to give them their first victory in the Premier division and boosts their chances of avoiding relegation. A special mention to Adam Tyas, who stepped up from 2nd Men’s for the unavailable Sunny Ram, and despite playing the night before, took an all-important rubber with Matt Haigh on his 1st team debut.

Results Round Up 16/12

As Christmas approaches, daily life starts to wind down. Not for the badminton players of Mapperley Park. A busy pre Xmas schedule to round off the 1st half of the 2015/2016 season (with the Xmas party somewhere in the middle)

After a narrow defeat in their opening fixture, the 1st men’s travelled to Rolls Royce Derby (a familiar theme this season) to face last season’s Premier division winners. Steve Smith was unavailable and replaced by Paul Holmes. It was a tough night, the team not really doing themselves justice, winning only two games in a 9-0 loss.

The 2nd men’s played their first match of the season against Rolls Royce, away in Derby. With a new captain and a new look team, they were looking for a strong start in their quest to get back to division 1. Solid performances by the two youngsters, Harry and Adam anchored a hard fought 5-4 win. After a battling performance in their opening fixture, the 3rd men’s faced two strong sides in Rolls Royce and Chilwell. Losses of 8-1 and 9-0 were hard on the team, considering the players that were missing.

The 4th Mixed lost a tough one 8-1 to Chilwell, but then bounced back to beat Boots 6-3, Andy Waplington and Kara Gokova taking a maximum. The 3rd mixed haven’t really got going yet, after their opening fixture was postponed they have suffered back to back defeats against a strong Chilwell side (8-1) and Bingham (6-3) despite Lisa Crouch and Con Truong taking two. The 5th Mixed opened their season away at Beeston Valley, with a completely new look team. An impressive 9-0 win giving real hope they can at last get out the division.
After losing the opening match of the season, 2nd mixed have been flying. Two 8-1 victories against Boots and the University, giving them a fighting chance of promotion to division 1, going into their last match vs East Leake in January. The 1st Mixed recorded two convincing wins in the space of a week. A 6-3 win at home to Bingham followed by an 8-1 win away at Byron. This maintains their division 1 status, but with three matches left could they make a push for promotion to the Premier division?

The 1st ladies suffered a tough 5-4 loss away at Forest, but bounced back well to beat Bingham 5-4 at home. A good team effort. Nat Wright and Jodie Smee taking two, with Jackie Thompson and Lisa Straw also taking two. This victory secures the 1st ladies team in division 1. The 3rd ladies team split their November results; a 9-0 win away at Trent University was followed by a 7-2 loss to St Giles. Despite this loss, they will still be in with a chance of promotion come the season finale.

“Bounce Back ability” might not be a phase found in the English dictionary, but it was oh so true for Mapperley Park Badminton Club after a slow start to the season.

After losing the first five matches of the season, the tables have turned dramatically, with the club winning four out the last five.

The one loss came for the 3rd Men’s at home to a well-supported Naseeb. Andy Tyas gave debuts to Dave Hall, who joined from Kimberley in the summer and Dan Wiltshire, also joining in the summer from Arboretum. A slow start gave the away side a 4-0 lead, but the reshaped side came back strong with Andy/Rob and Dave/Harry taking two rubbers each to narrowly miss out 5-4. An encouraging result, considering the 3rd team were pushed up a league by default.

After two tight losses to the University of Nottingham, the 3rd Ladies clawed one back by beating the students 5-4 in another close match. There was a debut for one of our juniors, Rhia Simmonds, under the new captaincy of Sarah Thomas. It was a great team effort, with two rubbers for the pair of Captain Sarah and former captain Maxine. The mother and daughter combination of Aylish and Karen took two rubbers, with Rhia and Kara taking a vital fifth.

The 2nd mixed got back on track with a 5-4 victory away at Forest, with Lisa Straw absent, Kath Sutton came in from the 3rd team to partner Matt Haigh. Captain Jodie and James Watkins took a maximum, leading the way for a good away victory.

The 1st Mixed and 1st Ladies faced local rivals Carlton BC, both within the space of a week. Both matches away from home, on a Friday night, it doesn’t always make for an easy ride. First up were the ladies. They raced into a 5-0 lead, with Nat and Jodie leading the way and silencing the home support. Despite the home side getting on the board late, the final score line was a very pleasing 7-2, getting the ladies off to a strong start in what will be a tough division 1 campaign.
Exactly a week later the 1st Mixed (with half the ladies that had won a week earlier) returned to the same venue. With Nat making a welcome return to partner Steve, Mapperley fielded their strongest side. A tight match was anticipated…. It didn’t’ turn out that way. A convincing 9-0 victory for Mapperley. Dominant from the start, and only dropping two games all evening. A sweet victory that eclipsed the memories of the 5-4 home defeat 2 years ago.

Results Round up 27/10

So five matches in to the new season, and much like last season, its been a tough start with no wins in the opening five. Hopefully, like last season, this trend is reversed come the turn of the year.

The 4th Mixed lost their second match of the season, away at Beeston Valley 5-4. Harry and Maxine taking 2 with a single rubber a piece for Gurj/Aylish, Andy/Kara.

The 2nd mixed kicked off their campaign away at Crusader in division 2. With three strong men in James, Sunny and Matt, they were looking to get a positive result. However, with Crusader managing to aquire several of Binghams top end senior men over the summer, it was a tough afternoon. James and Jodie took 2, with Matt and Lisa picking up 1, but this could prevent a 6-3 defeat. I wouldn't be surprised to now see Crusaders men rise from the lower depths of the Notts league into Mens Division 1.

Monday night saw the 1st mens open their 3rd Premier League Campaign, this time hoping to stay in the division for the first time. They faced Notts University. The team took a slightly new shape, with Steve and Craig the only surving pair from last season. Andy partnered up with Matt and Sunny moved up to partner new boy James Watkins.

Despite a good team performance it was another 5-4 defeat in the ninth rubber. Steve and Craig going down 21-16 21-19.

Uni possessed one really good pair that took a maximum, Andy and Matt ran them close but tired towards the end. James and Sunny impressed on their debut.

Overall positive signs depsite the defeat

A familiar tale for the 1st mixed....

After a year in exile (division 2) the 1st mixed were back in division 1 hoping to exorcise the demons of 2 years previous....

Unfortunately elements of those demons still remain...

Facing a strong University division 3 side, who had also got re promted last season from the parallel divsion, Steve went for virtually the same side as last season, the only difference was Jodie, deputising for Nat Wright:

Craig/Lou
Andy/Jackie
Steve/Jodie

2-1 up after three rubbers, with Andy/Jackie, Craig/Lou making light work. It quickly turned into 4-3 down going into the final two rubbers. Andy and Jackie took the 8th rubber but Craig and Lou could not beat the Uni 1st pair (who in fairness were a very good pair)

So a 5-4 loss, bringing back bad memories of two years ago. Steve and Jodie will be disappointed not to have took the one rubber that would have made the difference.

NB. Probably the slowest hall and shuttles i've ever played with, Bingham is tradiotionally slow but this place was something else!
